I have had good luck growing periwinkle and liriope under trees. I did put down some top soil/mulch to give the plants something to initial root into, but now I don't think I could kill them if I tried.

Mosquitos like the shade. You can plant whatever you want. As long as you have shade you have Mosquitos.

I love our maple tree, but nothing grows under it.

We have planted crocuses that look great in the spring. In the summer I just leave toy trucks and cars in the dirt so it looks like the kids are playing.

I should mulch it, but I swear it would be the whole front yard!. When the kids are past the tree climbing stage I'm cutting off the low branches.

I have Steppables creeping Jenny and creeping thyme in my yard and, though I love them, they aren't really meant to hold up to high traffic.
