My DD would definitely dress as a superhero and work some kind of headband or tutu into it. No need to get something new or bow to the Disney machine -- let your kid flex her own creative muscle around what it means!

We went to a princess/knight party that was cute. The girls all wore disney princess outfits (bleah!) and most of the boys didn't dress up. It was pretty fun for my boy even! He was captivated by the princess...

just put her in any frilly dress. you can add sparkle or something to a headband to make a tiara or you can get stuff from the dollar store if you want. sounds fun!

Buy a decent princess costume so you have it for future parties. Believe me, as a mom of a now 8 yr old girl, these parties become very popular. My child was never much into princesses so we didn't have a bunch of costumes and accessories to pull something together quickly. I ended up buying a Disney store costume on sale and used it for several years for these parties.

OP, let her take the theme and run with it. My daughter decided, at the last minute, to change her Halloween costume to a "princess fairy." So we went up to the dress-up box, and I asked her what kind of "princess fairy" she wanted to be. She wanted to be "a fire-fighter princess fairy." So, her costume was a dress, with a fire-fighter hat, and a spatula (...I don't know). She was thrilled.

I would just make something out of what you have. Does she have any dresses? Pick the fanciest one. Make a crown out of construction paper. She can decorate it with stickers, glitter, crayons, whatever. Does she (or do you) have any costume jewelry? Load her up with it. Do you have any scarves? Use one to make a sash or tie a belt. Get creative, she'll have a blast.

Any dress is fine, you don't need a full-on princess costume. And if you don't have a dress, a shirt and skirt/skort combination would do also. These kids are 3, I doubt any of them are REALLY INTO princesses. But they will like meeting the "real princess."
