I think I would do this. Combination library/study/storage room. Just make sure that the "storage cabinets" are elegant/nice looking pieces and I'll bet it could be quite pretty.

I would love a real study/library so this would be my idea. Add French doors and it becomes a great quiet space.

Alternatively, the game room is a great idea. If it's appealing to you, it will make you the go-to house for your kids and their friends to hang out as teens. Pool or ping pong table, tv and video games, whatever your family likes. Comfy seating, including some of those big bean bag chairs that kids can sprawl out on.

Ours is a piano/music room. But if we didn't need space for the grand piano, we'd make it a more formal lounge room with a desk/office area.

I have this. I just sold my formal dining set on craigslist (beautiful but we never used it). We are going to put in a bed and dressers and make it a guest room.

We already have a real guest room but are going to convert that into a home office. This real guest room is technically better for guests because it's got its own adjacent bathroom, but we need that location so DH won't be so close to the kitchen etc--he's too loud when on the phone, and I don't want to keep the kids quiet when he's on the phone.

The more centrally-located formal dining room, as a guest room, means when we have guests they have to walk into a hallway to use a bathroom. But so what. Also, how many days a year do we have guests--not that many--so that room will be quiet most of the time.

ahhh, beautiful table and chairs, bought new. Took a hit; sold it for 60% what I bought it for but they really were unused. It's great not to be a slave to your stuff.

The room that is always clean and does not embarrass you when unexpected company drops in.

I've seen similar rooms--one with a bookcase on one wall and two comfortable chairs with small table between them. Another one has a bookcase wall with 4 chairs grouped around a low round coffee table.

This is what we did. We have built-in shelves and desk on one wall which most afternoons is occupied by a child doing homework.

I'd go for a playroom, home office, or library.

Ours was right next to a too small dining room. We made the dining room into a small casual sitting room/ playroom and the formal living room into a huge dining room. Great for art projects, gathering for parties, etc.

We turned ours into a nice office too. DH works from home about once a week so it works out very well.

A friend of mine turned hers into a really cool bar/lounge area. She painted the walls a very dark color (I think dark brown) and bought a beautiful free-standing bar and stools. Dim lights and it has a really cozy and wine-bar feel to it.
