All the free preschools are east of the park, and many are in and around Capitol Hill. Would consider renting inbounds for Ludlow-Taylor, which has excellent preschool classrooms, and then spending that first year weighing where you want to end up long term.
This is not true. Although not all DC schools have PS (for 3 yos), all do have PK (4 yos). And even some schools west of the park (e.g., Francis-Stevens) have PS. In fact, OP, you might want to check out the neighborhood that feeds Francis-Stevens (West End, which is between Dupont and Georgetown)--lots of apartments, easy access to Gtown and Virginia. The older grades at FS are still a work in progress, I think, but I know folks who've done PS/PK there and been very happy.
