My second did not have a single word until just shy of 15 months and had 100 words by 18 months. She isn't even 2 yet and she speaks in 4-6 word sentences with a vocabulary of many, many, many hundreds of words. Neither of my kids walked until 14 or 15 months and both were runninng and jumping a couple months later.

Our DD didn't walk until 13 months. I met an adorable girl at the playground who had developmental delays and she wasn't walking until 18 months. Sounds like he is on the verge of both.

No, all kids are normal.
The words to use are typical and atypical development and/or delays.
And neurotypical is perfectly fine.

Not walking at 13 months is not an issue at *all*. Our daughter didn't walk until 14 months, and then one day just walked across the room and rarely crawled again.

She had maybe a few words by 13 months, but not many other than mama or dada. Maybe one other. Now at 26 months, she never. shuts. up. (and speaks in full, intelligible sentences) and her preferred travel speed is running.

Not a "major red flag" at 18 months. Just something to watch. My son walked at 19 months and was running at 19 months and 1 day.

Milestones are guidelines but there always are outliers. Don't let them freak you out.

The 14 month pp is absolutely, categorically wrong.

My DS at 13 mos has been walking since about 11.5 months but can still be very wobbly, and has been babbling on and on for as long as I can remember but still doesn't attach words to things - he says mama and dada but not necessarily to us. Ped not concerned when I of course asked about the 1-3 words thing at the 12 month appt. BUT he points to things when asked (where's your feet? where's the car? etc.), makes animal noises, and is extremely interactive. I think it's important to look at the big picture - your kid may not "have words" or be walking by the arbitrary milestone, but it's probably not an issue in the absence of other more concerning delays.

This sounded like our DS at 13 months. Our pediatrician was not concerned and said that DS would start walking and talking soon. I asked our pediatrician about the 1-3 words at 12 months guideline, and he said that many kids don't have any words at that point and just start talking a little later. DS clearly understood a lot of what we were saying (i.e., would start fussing and going to the door to go outside if we said outside) and followed directions (that he wanted to follow--bring me the book, etc.), so the pediatrician said it seemed like his language development was on track.

He started using a couple words at 14 months, and started walking at 15 months. He is now talking a ton and running around at 21 months.

Neither of my children walked until 15 months. My youngest is 18 months and has no more than 5 words now. His brother was the same and barely said anything until 2, he's now exceptionally advanced in vocabulary and cognative abilities (e.g. started reading at 3, has excellent comprehension) -- 1) 13 months isn't even remotely behind and 2) even if he was slightly behind the typical curve (like my children at that age) it means almost nothing - the chances are that by 2, or 3, or 4 you will never be able to tell the difference.

Up until 18 months, a ped is not going to bat an eye if your child isn't walking.
