Not paleo. Just a sprinter. If it is broke, try fixing it. No?

The OP didn't say she runs every day for hours. You Paleo people are causing more harm than good.

I had a terrible problem with ITBS and pain in my knee when running. I saw an orthopod who sent me to physical therapy. 1 year later, I did my first sprint tri. Two years later, I did my first half-marathon.

Go see a doctor and do what he/she says.

Go see a doctor. And take the long view with recovery. Just because you have to take a couple of months off doesn't mean that you aren't a runner anymore (even though it can feel like it).

My personal rule is to never run when i have any pain at all. If you keep on running until it hurts, even just a mile, that's bad. Take a very long break and swim or bike for a while. You may also have to accept running shorter distances fewer times a week. I just don't think all of us were cut out to regularly do marathons or even 10 mile runs. But if you are patient and modest about things you should be able to run forever.

acl tear will allow you to run painlessly, meniscus tear is a whole different story. Very painful and will get worse. Have it looked at with MRI. Xray shows nothing!!

Does anyone know of a guide for running-specific stretches? I confess - I don't stretch. I know I should, but it makes me impatient. Can anyone point to stretches specific for running and injury-prevention?

I'm 44 and foam roll, stretch and ice my knees after every run. My knees don't hurt when I run or after because I do this. I love to run, bike, swim and do yoga. I want to be able to do these things forever, so I make recovery and injury prevention key. So far it's been working. I rarely use motrin unless I am having pain. Then I will use it to help reduce inflammation just for a few days.

Heel striking is hard on the knees. Slowly shifting to a more forefront strike will help.

Major caution though on the minimalist shoes. I switched last spring to get faster. Broke them in as directed and ended up tearing my peroneal tendon, putting my most prized race ever at risk. Lots of people have been injured by switching to minimalist. It really works for some but you have to be very, very careful.

9:47 again. The doctor who prescribed RICE also suggested I use ibuprofen heavily until the pain stopped. I had been taking just 2-3/day; he suggested I increase that to 3-4 pills, 3x per day, while the pain persists.

I've got no view on the latest medical studies on ice. I just know that when I have aches and pains, they seem to go away faster if I'm icing them nightly. So I'll stick with ice unless I hear clear evidence it's hurting me.

I had a lot of knee tendinitis issues after training for a marathon last year. I suspected I was getting hurt from heel striking, so I switched to minimalistic shoes (Vibram Five-toed shoes). I also initially cut back on my distance considerably (running 2 miles, 3 days a week for the first month), and worked about 6 months to build up my ankle/leg strength. Now, I am running pain free about 20 miles per week and feel great. (I also run significantly faster now).
