We struck out the clause in our contract about putting a sign in the front yard. All work is being done in the rear, it was not necessary. they were upset about this and said that it impacted their bottom line but we didn't budge and they didn't offer us a discount as a condition for putting it there.
That's not how it works. No contractor can justify the cost of even a 2% discount by you allowing them to put up a sign that is unlikely to get them more business. The sign thing is when you are done negotiating, planning to do the work and you are still haggling over price. If the guy held out a little in order to offer you this final discount, he doesn't want to just give it to you for nothing in exchange. That shows he was holding out. So he says, OK I tell you what, if you let us post our sign... But believe me, they don't care. I'm not giving up even $500 profit just to post a sign. If you refused the sign, then I'd ask for something else that is easy for you to agree to, like writing an online review. Anything to give your cheap a$$ a final discount and get you to sign.

Sure enough a few months go by and I get call for a nice size job - where did you get my name ? Well - it was the nice previous client that had been a pleasure to work for.
Truly I am amazed at that folks that just don't get it. You want a discount for a sign - do you realize what you are telegraphing ?
Sounds like OP was "telegraphing" that she didn't want a sign and indicated that loud and clear in striking out the clause. If they have no other business and need to rely on a sign in the yard then they should have told her that then. Not just put it up anyway against her clear wishes.
I'm truly amazed that a contractor would do that.

I am a contractor. I don't usually post job signs. If you asked for a discount in exchange for me putting up a sign that would give me pause as my PITA radar would start going off.

I've had contractors in my house for 4 months At 3 months they put in the sign. Now 4 months in, they are spending less time here each week. I took the sign down. I said they can put it up closer to the finish. It's a sign that looks like the political signs I don't like and clutters up the yard. The son asked me to put it back up because it gives them more business. We have another 3 months to go. I don't want it to be 5 months to finish because they got so much business from putting up a sign. That is not fair to me. If I put it up in 2 months, I think They'll still get plenty of business and maybe our project will be done on time. I don't know if I'm right or not but I am upset at the thought of letting them put up a tacky sign causing our job to get done two months later.
