Mid-twenties poster here--OP you sound a little bit ridiculous.

Like someone else mentioned, you slept on a foam mattress for months, clearly aesthetics weren't a major priority for you (economics were, which sounds reasonable given your financial situation). And now all of a sudden you won't be happy living in a room that doesn't look right?

Furthermore, as you acknowledged, you could have just asked for a cell phone picture of the bed.

But you didn't, and your aunt drove hours to drop it off, which is a major sacrifice on her end in its' own right. If she "just wanted to get rid of it", she wouldn't have made the effort.

In my mind, the moment your aunt made a long trek to deliver the bed, was the moment you have to suck it up for 6-months.

Consider it a lesson learned.

If you have the money to rent a uhaul to drive it back to them and the money to build yourself a platform for the mattress - then you had the money to get yourself something to sleep on. Especially since you are willing to spend that kind of money just because you don't like the look of the bed. You didn't buy yourself a bed though and they went out of their way to bring you a bed because you made it seem to them like you had no choice but to sleep on a piece of foam on the floor.

You sounds quite immature. Yes, it would be rude to pout and complain about how you don't like how the bed frame looks in your room. Yes it would be rude to ask them to come and get it because you don't like pine furniture. Your cousin probably knows how you feel so I wouldn't lie to her parents or make up a random story. I assume they know the box spring didn't fit as they were the ones who brought it and set it up. What did they do with the box spring that didn't fit?

Personally for it only being 6 months - I would suck it up and not make a scene about anything. Do they want this piece of furniture returned to them or are they done with it?

This. If I offered you a free bed, and drove eight hours total to give it to you, and you told me later you didn't want it because it didn't match your other furniture or offended you sense of aesthetics, I would be pissed and think you were an entitled brat. If you said that you couldn't use it because the box spring didn't fit up the stairs so you couldn't use the frame--totally reasonable.

The headboard - suck it up. It's not permanent and really you can live with it. This is the advice I would go back and give my 21 yr old stupid, childish, whiny self.

The mattress - bigger problem for sure but since it's there and you can't move it. There are plastic storage bags that totally encase the mattress. Buy one with a 20% coupon and Bed Bath and Beyond and see if it helps.

OP: lesson learned -- some people cannot throw anything away. They want you to take it. Just tell them that the mattress has problems and that there are pieces missing, but it is a lovely piece that needs to go into storage again (at the local Salvation Army)

This is OP. It gets better. Now that I am (attempting) to sleep on the mattress, it's become clear that my aunt is a smoker (can't remember if she smoked when I was a kid). I can smell the cigarette stench coming off the mattress and have a great migraine forming.

I'm so mad at this whole situation.
