I have a question, perhaps another post. Is there a reputable furrier in the area for repairs?

My MIL (65) has one that she wears all the time in NY. Her friends also have\wear them. I probably wouldn't do it myself, but I do have several smaller fur pieces (scarves, wraps) that I wear. I don't tell anyone at work they are real. I get lots of compliments on them from my colleagues in their 20s/30s but I think people assume they're fake.

I absolutely wear it in this weather!

Agreed, however the cruelty with which most of our clothes are made is much worse.

Are you only considering mink? IMO fox coats, including arctic and silver, look more modern; but they only look good on medium to slender bodies.
I agree that you should look for a vintage item vs. buying new. Even outside of ethical considerations, it is not an sensible purchase in terms of cost per wear.

I have my grandmothers, it's a "day mink" it hits me mid-hip and has a belt. I wore it everyday last winter when I was pregnant - it was the only coat I had that fit! I'm 32, I would be wearing it agin this winter because it's super warm but it doesn't exactly seem spit up friendly. I have worn it a couple of times on date night.

I would not buy a new fur coat. If you can find a nice vintage one, that might work. I do have a cool vintage 1960's swing-style coat with a fur collar (got it with the original tags still on!), which I love, but anything more than an accent seems a little over-the-top to me and really says "old lady."

Maybe faux fur. I have seen some cute faux fur vests, or some cute trim around a sweater, but I have not seen any one wear floor length fur, and I live in an area that is a little more affluent. Most of the women around here where puffer coats. High end...of course.

Fur is warmer and more windproof than most any other coat. I was in Chicago over Christmas and saw quite a few people wearing full length fur coats.

I have my mother's full length fur. I wear it a few times every winter. I wear it to the Kennedy Center. I wear it to dinner and other events at private clubs. Pretty much places that I won't be the only one wearing fur. I would never wear it to work (by full length down coat is fine for that if my wool coat isn't warm enough) or to run errands.

I don't think I could bring myself to purchase a new coat though. I eat meat, wear leather shoes and down coats, but fur is somehow different to me.

I have not seen someone wear one since 1980s. It would look weird.

Aside from the animal cruelty fact, fur coats just scream old lady to me. It's out ethically, and as far as style goes - permanently.
