Hi PP 16:01. Which clinic are you using? Also, did you ever find out why you weren’t approved for the medication initially?

Your 2018 reply helped me soooo much. I am a federal employee and in the same boat in 2019. I signed up for insurance through the MD exchange for just myself. But, I also kept my federal self + 1 plan. If I can do 2 egg retrievals this year, I come out ahead. I also plan to try HGH with my 1st retrieval due to my advanced maternal age (43).

I have to post this update as a woman who finally got some clear answers. I live in MD and work for the Fed Govt in DC. My employers insurance does not cover IVF treatments or any of the injectable medications. After taking out a loan for my first IVF treatment and my cycle being cancelled I decided to take a different route this time around. I cancelled my federal government insurance and purchased coverage through the MD Health Exchange. I currently have CareFirst Blue Cross with a monthly payment of $490 and IVF is covered at 100%. No only that my injectable medications were denied at first but after providing information to the insurance company of my stave 4 endometriosis and my history of infertility my claim was approved. My medications went from almost 3k to 145$ out of pocket. I used Acaria Specialty Pharmacy instead of Carefirst because they are cheaper and accept all of the discounts available i.e. Design Rx, First Steps & Compassionate Care. If you are taking Follostim, Ganirelex or HCG I highly recommend that you apply for these discount programs as they can completely eliminate your high copays.

I sincerely hope someone finds this information helpful. Goodluck to you all!!!

I have carefirst HMO in MD (being in MD makes a differwnce due to the mandate) Anyways, as far as getting specifics from your insurance company... call Shady Grove, even if you are not dealing with Shady Grove and ask them to email or fax you a copy of the insurance questionnaire. SO HELPFUL!! Has specific codes on it for procedures and drugs. That way your insurance company can look for the exact thing youre seeking answers to.

This may be an older post, as you already said, but it currently applies to my life and is also EXACTLY what I am looking for! Can it be possible that IVF is covered for some single/unmarried women, but not for others in Maryland with Carefirst? I am in the same situation, wanting IVF to remove eggs, (I will then have to hire a surrogate to carry the embryo). But Shady Grove said NOTHING for IVF is covered. Blood work and HSG and all other procedures were covered, but they said no to IVF... and a nice little price tag of $11,000 for IVF alone!

Any suggestions???

11k does not include the meds, which will be another 2-5k. Also, Not sure your medical reasons for using a surrogate, but many women, esp over 35 need 3 rounds of ivf to get viable eggs. Insurance usually covers testing and diagnosis only, not ART - ivf and iui. The plans that do cover ART generally require proof of marriage and sometimes require you to try iui before proceeding to ivf. SG generally knows their stuff as they are the largest game in town. Many single women on here have turned to international clinics to save money, you can start a thread asking for their advice if that's something you'd be open to. Good luck.

Anonymous wrote:Is anyone familiar with Carefirst Blue Choice or Carefirst Blue Preferred infertility coverage in Maryland? I'm considering enrollment in one of these plans. I am single and will be using a known donor for insemination. I know I will not qualify for IVF coverage, because Maryland law states that IVF coverage is only allowed if the patient's eggs are fertilized by her husband's sperm.

Does anyone know if I would still qualify for infertility coverage for blood tests and ultrasounds leading up to IVF? Is IUI covered? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Since your initial post in 2013, what has happened?? (I also just posted today2, 2/23/16, with similar questions).

I hope all went well and that you found answers! I hope I find answers too!!!!
