Yup. I have never collected without that happening, and always put in extra with the understanding I can pay myself back a bit of it if money comes in late.

If I contributed to the class gift, and you didn't sign from the whole class, I would be very upset. I would have given with the understanding I was paying for some of the others.

You can also sign the names of the 9 families and then say "and rest of the class".

Is $100 from the entire class too little?

Sometimes the class gift donations are for 2 teachers + gym, music teacher, etc. So no, it's not always >$90 for one teacher. I feel for you OP!

OP, suck it up and add in some extra cash. Or, if you're friends with some of the donors, ask them to cough up more. They will, I'm sure.

Next year, say fuck it and do your own thing.

We give our own gift so we dot contribute to the class gift. It isn't required so relax, sign the card from the class and don't worry others will give too.

When we did it, we had two or three who did not participate. A lot contributed later than we would have liked, so we bought flowers to go along with the gift card. We signed it from the whole class. You never know why someone does not participate.

It sounds like there is $150 or so for the teacher-- doesn't seem like the kind of thing that is not worth giving. Don't know what you mean about being unfair to people who didn't participate? The gift is best not tied to individual parents anyway.
