If you ever have any butt or leg soreness after running, have him get you a foam roller. I like the solid black ones the best, about 24" long. You can roll your butt and thighs over it and ease your soreness and aid in recovery.

He could also get you some nice running socks or an Under Armour cold gear running shirt for winter running, or a good hat and special ear muffs for runners. Or a good water bottle with a hand holster if you don't have one - roadrunner sports has a good one. (go for 20 oz if you can.)

Road ID. RoadID.com I feel like this should be required for anyone who engages in running, biking, rollerblading, etc...

A pair of elastic no-tie laces. There are a couple of different brands like Yankz.

Good hat for running, either a warm winter one or a nice breathable baseball-cap style

Motivation by registering you for a spring race!

Gift card for your closest running store. I love Potomac River Running which has a couple of stores in NoVA.

A training journal. Again, good motivation if you have to track your workouts to make sure you are doingi t!

14:36 here.

I definitely agree with you on TJ MAxx--I was just there last night and they had lots of cute running clothes and even some pink Nathan Quick shots bottles for $7.99!

But I actually do use my Garmin a lot. First, several years ago, before I got a phone with the ability to do running apps like Mapmyrun, and I've just become used to it. Also, when I've run with a friend, she has used her mapmyrun app and I've used the garmin, and hers has run out of battery on the longer runs. Also, we were getting inconsistent distances--her mapmyrun app. was always telling us we had gone further than my garmin said we had gone--I'm not sure which was correct, but I'd rather fool myself into running more, not less
I didn't pay a lot for my garmin, though. I found someone selling a used one on Craigslist for a very low price (I think $40?).

I've thought about getting my husband a Garmin but he uses mapmyrun on his phone and loves it.
