I saw him once, here in DC, near that MacDonalds where New York Ave and Mass Ave start to converge. This was back in the mid 90's. He was smiling and waving to all us gawking Americans.

"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. I am saddened by his death, the world lost a lot today. Mandela, we will miss you and we will always remember you

A great man has left us. I dream that our leaders all over would try to walk in his shoes with humility and true love of country and people. He could have stayed in power but felt he needed to make way for others. How many Presidents or Prime Ministers walk away from power at the height of their popularity? None! Thank you South Africa for your gift to us.
R.I.P. Madiba well done.

Just saw this on FB,

"I cannot believe it, Nelson Mandela has died. This is so unfair and completely unexpected. The world will be an absolute hell hole now that he has left us and is not longer giving us his guidance. We have suffered a tremendous and unexplainably abrupt loss"

He was also gone a lot as a result of all his work with the revolution. Not to mention the man did spend 30 years unjustly imprisoned.

Mandela was married 3 times, and has been divorced twice. I don't recall why he and Winnie divorced, but his first wife (before Winnie) mentions a lot of Mandela's infidelity as a primary source of conflict.

There's a weird thing that happens to men championing for rights - they have a tremendous amount of wisdom and reserve in a lot of ways, but not in others. MLK and Gandhi are also well known for sleeping around and cheating on their partners. On the one hand, it points to their humanity (our "heroes" are just like us), but it's difficult for me to still reconcile. It's good to acknowledge their achievements, but also to remember that such icons were far from perfect or saints.

Nelson Mandela was a great man who will have millions mourn his death. Meanwhile you're just a loser posting on DCUM.

I only wish we all could learn his lessons. Especially about hate. A good leader cannot hate.

Yes, and I always wished I could meet him and have a conversation with him or maybe just hear him speak in a small group situation--a man of many accomplishments!
