We have one kid and two sedans (we live in the suburbs). Our next car will be an SUV solely because of the trunk space issue. We do a lot of road trips and outdoorsy activities requiring gear (fishing, biking) and we need more room now that we're three. If we were just driving for commuting and around town the sedans would be fine

We considered a CRV and found it had tiny storage. My previous Ford Contour sedan had way more storage space. We got a Prius V instead-tons more ability to move stuff and much better gas mileage.

4 doors is the critical issue with kids and car seats. Whether they are on a sedan or SUV doesn't matter.

In OP's defense, a sedan isn't always big enough. I have a c class mercedes and the trunk space is ridiculously small. Our uppababy vista takes up the entire trunk so you can't fit groceries, shopping bags, etc in there. Say you're going on a road trip - you have to put your luggage in the back seat. I now use an umbrella stroller and put the vista in my husband's SUV. Trunk space should definitely be a consideration.

I have a SUV but I think it's more a personal preference. Before my DD I had a two seater sports car and decided I wanted something bigger. It's more than enough space and I like that. I can fit her stroller, a trip to costco and Target and still have plenty of room.

Sadly there isn't much demand for the Mazda 5-type car throughout the U.S., only in urban areas like DC. I wish Ford marketed the C-Max hybrid with the third row here in the U.S. like they do in Europe. I love my M-5 but would love it even more with better gas mileage.

I come from Europe, where the Mazda 5 is in competition with a lot of other similar cars. Here in the US, however, it is the only vehicle in its category and I've noticed more and more of them on the road. People are making good choices...

Alternatively, if you plan on many carpools and road-trips, I highly recommend my car, the Mazda 5. I got last year's model for less than $20K. It takes up as little space as a sedan but has 6 seats!!! 3 rows (2 rows can fold down, 3rd row is for small people!). Sliding doors are great for youngsters who might otherwise bang the door into the car parked next to yours. It is truly a "mini"-van, ie: without all the bulk and stigma. Accelerates no problem. Turns are tighter than DH's Toyota Corolla! Reasonably fuel efficient and good for city parking.

The CRV is not a good car. Our Toyota Corolla served us well when DC1 was an only. It's not fashionable, but we don't care. It is now DH's car and going on 10 years old.

Another thing to consider is how much seating you need. We have 2 kids and often have visitors, so when our smaller car died we got a Mazda 5. We've been able to fit 3 kids and 4 adults in it. As your kid gets older and you are driving other kids around, it might come in handy to have the availability of a third row. When the third row is down you have tons of cargo space.
