We are a 5 minute walk to the EFC metro and a 5 minute walk to McKinley Elementary. I drive to work in Arlington/McLean (10 minutes or so) and DH takes the metro into DC. Every evening he sends an email as he is leaving his office and is at our door exactly 30 minutes later.

We love N Arlington, our neighbours and our kids' school.

If you look at the test results Fairfax County Schools closer in like McLean, Langley and Marshall pyramids are much better. I would try to stick to the Yorktown pyramids to get the same level of exceptional quality as the above Fairfax County schools. You will also notice that Yorktown pyramids will command a higher price than the rest of Arlington.

It's terrible Metro is so crowded and I always feel bad for the people who get on in Arlington having to plead with others to make room on the cars and then ending up pressed against random strangers whose levels of hygiene vary and staring at the people who boarded earlier and have seats. It just reinforces how crappy it is to live in Arlington

^^Defensive much? I would hazard to guess that the vast majority of posters on DCUM are MOMS! Not weird to offer what moms do re: work and commuting.

I work in Maryland - I find that the commute is not bad because I am going against traffic. The Amer. Legion bridge in the morning is a parking lot going from MD into VA, but this is not my experience with VA into MD. I then take back roads in the evening to avoid 495 til Amer Legion.

You're right. They're much better with smaller class sizes, more resources per kid, and none of that silliness with the gifted program. Arlington kids have access to both TJ AND HB Woodlawn, two of the top high schools in the nation, and Yorktown is top-tier.

Live in N Arlington and work in DC. DC attends one of the Arlington choice schools (not our neighborhood school - Nottingham) and is on the school bus at 7 am (been doing this since K). I leave the house by 7:20 and drive in -- at my desk by 7:45. Leave around 4:15 pm and pick up DC by 4:45 (earlier if there isn't a lot of traffic -- which has improved a great deal in the past year). Home by 5 pm. It works.

I've done all of the above - we lived in Fairlington for a few years, I took the bus to the Pentagon and metro to first Capitol Hill then Farragut West - both were quick and easy. Now we live near Yorktown highschool - my husband works in Ballston and our kids were in daycare by the metro so we'd drive together, he'd park and I'd drop off then take metro in to the city. Quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive.
