Grow some fucking balls and buy whatever you want as long as all your bills and financial responsibilities are handled first. So many guys are "beaten into submission," foregoing any pleasures they may desire, from sexual to video games, all in the name of making their women happy. It's kind of ridiculous.

who cares? I don't understand the game console thing but I'd have to ask whats wrong with the old one you are usinf to stream Netflix?

Silly OP. Buy the damn thing. I'm not crazy about the fact that my husband likes video games, but he works hard, contributes a ton to our family life, and is an attentive husband and father. I'm not going to stand in the way of how he spends his free time.

Haha. I feel your pain OP. My DH won't let me buy the Xbox One, too. He thinks it's a waste of money. I agreed to wait until after the new year. One month won't kill me and I think the price will come down.

Maybe I am being too hopeful for you OP, but could she be getting it for you for Christmas, since it would be a good joint family gift that everyone will use?

If your wife is the one who takes care of day to day finances, do you have a good idea of your cash flow situation? My husband brings home north of $8 grand a month, net, and yet I'd be hard pressed to cashflow an unplanned $600 expense without something else getting sacrificed, particularly with Christmas around the corner.

Does she keep a budget you could look at together?

Op - it sounds like you need to step back in and be involved in the finances. You should both be part of managing the family money.

Your wife should not be freaking out on you. That sounds like an anger management issue.

It sounds like now that your income has changed so drastically you need to sit down and have a conversation about money, spending, and come to a compromise or agreement. Do you each have a $3000/yr (or whatever agreed on amount) slush fund to spend as you wish? She can buy shoes, bags, spa days etc or whatever she wishes and you can buy an xbox and whatever you want

Speaking from personal experience: if, before marriage, you did not have an emergency fund, did not contribute to match in your 401k, and/or bought a car costing 50% or more of annual salary, then suck it up- your wife is right to quash the release day buy until you make up for lost time.

If, however, you've been generally responsible finance-wise throughout your career, whereas your wife shells out $400 a month on Starbucks and blowouts, feel free to go to town.

We have one big pot and all the after tax money enters and then gets shuffled to various accounts. 10 years ago when we were starting out and I made no money it was easy to just let her handle it. Now that we've been blessed and I'm earning a salary that my parents probably didn't earn over their working lives I feel that we can spend on things like this. But she'll see the CC statement and freak.

OP, I have an issue w/the "won't let my buy"....You are a grown man who I assume makes his own money and you have earned the right as a responsible adult to spend your money on whatever you want to spend it on...well within reason. Meaning not at a strip club, etc.

Go ahead and buy it. What is she going to do? Divorce you over it??
Trust me...IF she does, then you guys have much bigger issues than a game console.
