The link posted above made a canned fruit starter, then mixed it with box cake and box vanilla pudding. I don't doubt there are better recipes (presumably the Amish do not use Betty Crocker) and I have no idea what recipe OP is using. Certainly possible the folks who seem deeply offended by he cake are imagining something different than what OP is making.

Actually the fact that the fruit is fermented is the most appetizing thing about the recipe. I think the other posters were more offended by the idea of spending a month to dump fruit in syrup on box cake mix.

Interesting, the Amish friendship starter I have used has no cake mix...ingredients are quite simple milk, sugar, yeast, flour and then the great flavor comes from the fermentation process and some people add different flavors before baking. I like a spice type cake, so I add fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger, topping with a nice brown sugar/cinnamon crust.

Fermented foods are something I'm really into. Do you eat yogurt or Keffir?

My kombucha would probably offend posters as well. Google image Kombucha SCOBY.

If you think you killed it, mix in a packet of active dry yeast and continue with the recipe. I'm kind of surprised that anything survived in a medium that sweet, but assuming the recipe works, adding cultivated yeast should restart it.

My husband brought home some friendship cake dough (?) that a coworker gave him. He gave it a feeble try but we threw it away. That was the first time I heard of it. I'm not a fan of recipes that take weeks, or that are part of some chain letter. I get it - friendships need nurturing - but I really don't need some dough I have to nurture. Doesn't that take away time I could be using to actually nurture the friendship?

I did this one year and thought it was fun. Ignore the haters, OP. I don't know the recipe. Just wanted to give you a shout out of support.

People suck sometimes.

I got so grossed out after the first week, I threw it away. OP look up "Herman" recipe instead. It makes a yummy coffee cake.

The first instruction mentions how to keep ants out.

It's like prison wine cake.

Ok I'll stop.
