As a Catholic, this strikes a nerve with me. Roman Catholicism seems to be the most socially acceptable religious group to bash, and it's everywhere. Television, news, social media, hollywood/movies, even in the workplace. What strikes me the most is that those who criticize the Catholic Church's stance on morals, etc. is that most people respect the beliefs of other religions, many of whom hold just as strict if not more strict beliefs, etc. Orthodox Judaism and Muslim come to mind as examples of this. People place a double standard when it comes to Muslim beliefs or Orthodox Jewish beliefs, and even the atheists/agnostics run to their rescue. It's a shame that Catholics are one of the most oppressed religious groups of the 21st century, although most people pay no attention to it because it's become socially acceptable. Total double standard. I don't hear anyone bashing Muslims for the oppression of women, or arranged, consanguineous marriages among the Indian people.

It's a shame that this double standard exists, because it ultimately fosters resentment when you don't get treated with the same equality and respect.

And for the record, the number of teachers in the U.S. alone who have sexually abused children FAR outweigh the incidence of priests. Not making any excuses, but you don't hear the same vitriol toward the teaching profession.

Yes, I've heard some of the most vile anti-Catholic venom from Baptists. They definitely hate Catholics for sure. It's like they have this weird, sick obsession with bashing Catholics.

Funny, I'm the OP and we were raised Episcopalian. My mother is the queen of the catholic haters and told me almost from the day I could walk what was wrong with the Catholic Church. Sin all week and just go to confession. Never go to a catholic doctor if I were pregnant, because in an emergency, he would save the baby and let me die. Those types of things..,

And I find the Catholic bashing odd, mostly because all the Catholics I know in real life and nice, normal, middle of the road people. I may not agree with religion in general, but the Catholics I know are very nice.



There's a difference between "bashing" the Catholic Church (the institution, the leadership, the scandals, the policies, etc), and the lay people. I agree that most Catholic people are reasonable, decent people. But you can't confuse the former, for the latter. To criticize the former, is very fair.
