Most of the rooms in our home have the ceiling painted a shade lighter than the room color, at the advice of a decorator. I think it really warms up the room. I wouldn't recommend it for really dark colors, though.

We did this in our living room with a very high ceiling. The walls are a mid tone blue grey (BM cloudy sky) and we painted the ceiling a lighter blue grey (BM smoke). It looks great! We have white moulding.

I thought our interior designer was nuts when she told us to paint our ceilings a shade or two lighter than the walls. We took the risk and loved it. The rooms look so much warmer and there's not a jarring transition between painted walls (or moulding) and a white ceiling. Our rooms were lighter colors (light blue, light green, light yellow/beige), so I am not sure what you do if your wall is red. I think it makes your room look very "finished".
