I think for a family of 5 I'd prefer at least 3000 sq ft, but less wouldn't be a deal breaker. Right now we are a family of 4 plus large dog living in a 2000 ft town home. It's fine most of the time for us.

Location, location, location. We have five and love our 1800sf SFH pretty much because of its location in terms of its physical setting, the neighbors and proximity to people/places in our lives. If you need a gift wrapping station and a full bathroom for each person, then you probably need a 5000 sf, new construction home in Clarksburg/Loudoun.

Our house is 2000 sq ft. plus we have a 900 sq ft basement. We live in the burbs. Before this we lived in an 4 bedroom, 2 bath 1100 sq ft home with three people. It was miserable. All the rooms were super small, the second bathroom was in the basement. It was just annoying.

We lived just outside the beltway with a family of 6 - small 3 bedroom split level. It really got on my nerves after a while. No place to put anything and we were really good at decluttering every season. I am fairly low maintenance but it got old. After 7 years, we moved this past year and now live in a modest 4 bedroom colonial. I am in love with it! I think it is 2700 sq feet and then the basement will add more (maybe 3500?) when we refinish it this winter. It is perfect for our family. I would not want anything bigger ... too much to clean and maintain.
(I will say that my husband's commute went from 10 minutes to 30 minutes, so it did not change things *too much* in that regard. We may have stuck it out if he had to take on a long commute.)
