They probably go to state schools or smaller private colleges that are happy to have them. "DC average" is pretty damn good nationally. Then they graduate and hopefully get decent jobs and live happily ever after.

Because outside of the ivies are not about the education, they are about the connections and recruiters at those schools. Every year they turn away full classes of equally qualified candidates. The real problem is that the US has become like France and given an inordinate prestige and thus power to the alumni of these universities. They are not smarter or better, just empowered by our own obsessions.

Maybe they are late bloomers. Some people succeed early, other do it on their own schedule

Not sure.Something to brag about? I don't have friends who'd be interested in listening to me telling them how my kid is going to Yale.
I feel like my kid will make it anyway. He just needs to work hard to get what he wants. Nobody is going to do it for him.He is almost 7, told him that needs to study hard and I'm not going to give him money since I don't have any.He can go to UDC Community College for all I care, and show me he can keep his grades up and then transfer to his choice of university.
He is a bright kid.We just have to work on putting some extra effort into his studies early on, and I think he'll breeze through school.
