According to this article:

"Smith’s office will not release recommended revisions until a month after city Democrats nominate a mayoral candidate next spring. That limits the potential political fallout for Gray (D), who hasn’t yet said whether he plans to run for reelection."

So, I don't think this suggests anything about whether or not Gray will run. It actually gives him the opportunity to assure everyone that he can take care of them just as long as he gets re-elected and then screw them Fenty-style once he has the nomination (Fenty ran in opposition to a mayoral takeover of schools, then supported a mayoral takeover after winning the primary).

There are DCPS families in Crestwood. We are one of them. Obviously, I have no idea what will happen and you may be right that Crestwood is on the chopping block. But, from a political vantage point, that makes no sense. Cutting Crestwood out of Deal and Wilson saves very few seats. On the other hand, it will piss off 1,000 some fairly wealthy and politically active families that will worry about their property values. So, politically, the cost benefit analysis doesn't make sense. Which of course, probably means nothing.

Notice there was no public process for selection of the panelists who will decide our kids' futures. Just friends of the lame duck Mayor with some supposed involvement in education issues. Very much not a blue ribbon panel, and very much not a panel of citizens picked with public input or specific criteria.

Kids who live in Woodley Park are in-boundary for O/A but an choose to goto Deal for middle school so that is how they are in the picture. It is only about 10 kids, although one year it was a lot more, however, ten seats that won't go to somebody else.
