K is the proper metric abbreviation for thousand. M is the proper one for millions.

M and MM are incorrect. Some people think they are using roman numerals, but MM = 2,000 not a thousand thousands.

M is what is used in the finance/investment world. No one uses K.

Also used on the printing world to signify quantities.

Finance uses (000's), not M.

Anonymous wrote:Interesting, I'll bet if K is metric and G is the old fashioned English system, that Fox does it as a political statement. I could see Fox opposing the metric system as a liberal UN driven thing that Obama is trying to impose on good red-blooded Americans.

G was never the old fashioned system.

It's an age thing. Before the advent of metric education in schools in the 1970s, G always meant 1000, but especially when came to money, and it was usually spelled out. The origin is much older though. It stood for "a grand sum of money." Late in life, "Grand" got abbreviated to "G,". But over the last 30 years it has almost been entirely replaced by "K."
