Also, I agree that PP shouldn't make assumptions about Feds. I'm a Fed with a trust fund and a high earning spouse. The big firm attorneys I work with on a regular basis wouldn't know this unless we start talking about our neighborhoods, where our kids go to school, etc. And there are plenty of Feds whom I work with that also have high-earning private sector spouses.

I recognize brands I like - vintage Cartier, Longines and brands I think are played out like Rolex and the uber-expensive ones I see advertised in GQ.
When I notice a quality vintage time piece or an elegant, expensive but not a flashy brand I think the guy has great taste and appreciates quality.
When it's a brand new Rolex, Patek, etc. I might think he's a little flashy and obnoxious - but then again I work in consulting for Federal clients and we usually try to avoid flashy displays of wealth so we can relate to our clients.
