The Roundhouse, by Louise Erdrich. (A new book by an established author.) But the PP at 22:46 may find it sad and depressing, because it contains rape, murder, torture, and dead children, as well as humor.

I am reading "The Pure Gold Baby," and like it so far.

Other books I have enjoyed this year:
Into The Darkest Corner
The Husband's Secret

To me, it seems like all the big new fiction is so sad and depressing. Is there anything out there that doesn't include rape, incest, murders, torture, dead children, or dwarves knitting in an unheated attic? I'm so sick of all the darkness. Not that I want vampires or zombies, but something a bit humorous or lighthearted would be so great!!

That book was so boring, I couldn't even finish it. OK, so I may be one of the "lowbrow" people OP is talking about, but that's OK. On behalf of the lowbrows, don't choose this book!

Transatlantic by Colum McCann is amazing. Just won the National Book Award.

Thank you for mentioning Wally Lamb's new book. I did not know about it.

Good premise, but I couldn't finish it.

I was really looking forward to The Interestings, but I felt like she gave up 2/3rds of the way through the book. But, for a book club, I guess there would be plenty to talk about even if people didn't finish it.

She's not new, but she has a new book out. OP asked for new books or authors.

Sorry, I didn't see that she asked for new books as well. Yes, the new Lahiri is supposed to be amazing. There's also Donna Tartt's new novel, The Goldfinch, which comes out Tuesday. I don't know if it's too ambitious for your book club, but it's getting phenomenal reviews.

Loved orphan masters son, but I could see the Oprah side of my book club being challenged and put off. I was so intrigued by north Korea as the setting.
