I used Libby's canned purée for a pumpkin cheesecake and it was fine. Weird.

I made 3 Libby's pies this year and no grit.

try canned pumpkin puree. less work than using a pumpkin. you can control how you want to season it.

I used real pumpkin and a can of Libby's this year. No grit.

I am the OP of this thread and I used my coupon for a free replacement can to make PP for thanksgiving. It was better, but there were two instances of biting into grit, one for DD and one for me. I guess pumpkins grow in sandy soil, so they are not getting washed off enough?
I say keep bugging them about it!

My wife baked three pies with Libby plain pumpkin for thanksgiving. All three pies have a sandy type of grit in them.

My Libby's pumpkin pie turned out perfect this year. No sand or grit. Wonder if the gritty cans can be identified by date or lot number?

I used Libby's for my pie this year and it wasn't gritty at all. I wonder what is in the pumpkin that causes the grit?

I'm glad I found this site. I had the same "gritty" issue last year and thought it could be egg shell or spices. I was very careful with the eggs this year and bought all new spices. In the one serving of pie I had today I got several bites of grit like sand or glass. Really grosses me out to bite into grit. Throwing the pie out and calling Libby's.

Oh for sure! Most of the internet chatter blames the sand or grit in the pumpkin puree coming from Libby so I suspect they are the supplier of Costco's pumpkin pies which are full of it. I mean what's going on here? If there is one thing I can't stand it's chewing something and discovering small pieces of rock or dirt in the mix!

oh, weird! When I lived overseas and it wasn't readily available (and I was too lazy to cook down a pumpkin), I hoarded libby's canned pumpkin. If I'd hauled it back in my suitcase and ended up with a gritty pie, I'd probably have come unhinged! Ick!

I have always used Libby's because it is what my grocery store carries year round. I think I will stock up on one of the organic types that always show up around this time of year. I have a 17 month old that loves pumpkin pancakes.

How do you make pumpkin pancakes?
