If a child were having trouble breathing and in visible distress, I think any adult at a school would have a call made to 911. The scary part for all parents is when outside signs seem normal or non life-threatening. (Like Natasha, btw, who reportedly was "fine" the first hour after her little fall on a beginner slope.) I think this is a case of people looking to place blame where in fact if a nurse were present, if the dad made the pickup, if the girl herself knew she was in trouble, if an ambulance came, the result could still be the same.

School should have called 911--but the parents screwed up big time.

As a teacher, I had kids throwing up and the parent would refuse to come get them. Whose fault is that?

Funny how you call Virginia a socialist state. I thought the legislature was mostly republicans who hate funding public works and social services.

Yeah you have socialized medicine..which sucks. You are the country where Liam Neesen's wife Natasha Richardson died because he had to go almost two hours to a hospital that had someone who could treat head trauma. This was at one of your country's top ski resorts. In the states..she would have been to a trauma center asap and they would have drained the blood from her brain and she would be alive. Seems strange that our country USA is going backwards. awful just awful.

"Socialized medicine" means that there aren't high-level trauma centers immediately next to ski resorts? How many high-level trauma centers are there immediately next to ski resorts in the US?

Whatever, Natasha didnt go to ER when they tried to take her.
I can always have medical care no matter if I am employed or not.
I can see ANY doctor not just certain docs.

A coworker's child died after having an attack. He was at home, in bed, at night, had a severe attack. An ambulance was called, they treated him and took him to the hospital but he did not survive the asthma attack. No one was to blame.

Too many schools have staff lacking common sense..if Dad is an idiot..take leadership..get the child to a hospital.

Here's the thing. It might be that the father didn't do the right thing. That he should have made sure she had an inhaler, and picked her up when she called. But that doesn't absolve the school, or reduce the need for a nurse. The reality is that schools have responsibilities to all of their kids, including those with crappy parents.

If a child is standing in the office saying that she can't breathe, then the school has an obligation to call 911. The fact that they didn't means that they have some responsibility for her death.

Speculating nonsense and garbage. Do you have any facts in this case? He said, she said, he said, she read!

So only a nurse is qualified to pick up the phone and dial 911?
