Principal at back to school night. He said they don't USUALLY like to go beyond that because the child's comprehension/writing response skills don't match up beyond that point. He said it was this way at MCPS but for all I know he he could have been talking more about our school. It was in response to a question from a parent.
For what it's worth we are at an academically strong school where there are a lot of good readers and I know some of DC's friends are reading Magic Treehouse, etc. at home. (DC is not that advanced but I'm finding this thread very interesting! Thanks to all the PPs.)

Where did you get this statistic? My kindergartener was assessed at a level J a few weeks ago. I do think he's a strong reader, but I'm sure he's not the only one.
