Excellent. Fewer slow people to have to pass out on the trails.

Yes, if you could do just one, you could get jacked doing nothing but pull-ups. I vote for running as the single most overrated exercise.

I'm really surprised nobody has mentioned boxing yet. This is truly an entire body work out.

Burpees with a push-up.

The treadmill hate is so annoying to me. I do both and don't really have a preference absent weather variables but the outdoor running purists get on my nerves when they act like you aren't doing anything cause it's on a treadmill. There's a place for both!

As for best single body exercise, this is different for everyone. It depends of what your goal is and your strength level. Pull ups are amazing and I worked hard to be able to do them but they do nothing for your legs. All lats and biceps depending on your grip. If you have the equipment I'm going with Deadlifts.

Push ups and planks

Another runner who uses a treadmill. I do a good part of my speed work on a treadmill and I find I push myself harder than on the track. Personally, my effort is probably equitable between a treadmill and track when it comes high intensity workouts.

I don't agree that running is a great full body workout; I may be strengthening my core and legs but I know I am not increasing upper body strength. I would go with a burpee or other plyometric exercise.

Swimming.
Total body work out, heart pounding, and much lower impact than running and weight lifting.

Does wonders for your entire body (if you do it correctly using your arms, with correct posture for core strengthening).

Oh and don't forget the added bonus of great heart health.

LOL. Running on a treadmill isn't "real running"?[/quote

A treadmill is a machine, no? And a machine does work, no? Therefore, you're not quite getting the 100% workout you would get if you are 100% moving your own body outside. Granted the efficiency is pretty good in a treadmill, but with the law of physics being tried and true, you don't work as much when using a machine.

So if you're asking for the single best exercise, I think i have to vote for the hated burpee - one exercise move is a squat, jump, push up, jump, and then another jump. So you get arms and legs in plus aerobic.

God I hate burpees.

More complete than a pull-up
