I see them at the afterschool pickup in town and they are constantly talking about their DC's achievements, AAP, competitions, etc. I've never seen this at any other school nearby and I know a lot of extremely smart students at other Vienna schools.
So some parents will keep their kids out of good programs in good schools just because they overhear a few things at pickup that they dislike.
I hear parents constantly talking about their kids' athletic achievements and travel teams and tournaments and I get tired of that, but it's considered acceptable. It's their kids' lives and it's what fills the entire family's time; it's what parents talk about with other parents because it's the activity they share. Same is true of kids whose activities are Math Counts or Science Olympiad or orchestra or band or whatever. I doubt these parents were standing around crowing about their kids' genius. If they were telling friends that a kid made it onto an academic team, well, it's that time of year, when the teams are forming. Parents would be having the same conversations about kids getting onto an athletic team. But it's not acceptable in DCUM-land to discuss a kid's academic extracurriculars -- oh, no, that's bragging.
OP, visit Freedom Hill, go to information nights even if they don't apply to your kid's age yet, go to events there, sit in on PTA meetings to get a feel for the overall school, talk to neighbors with kids there who have already gone through K, talk to people who actually have kids in private schools. As you see, posts on DCUM usually end up turning into discussions about bragging parents or other schools, not the one you originally asked about.
