Lena Dunham is fat. She chooses to accentuate this feature in how she dresses. I don't see why Joan R's calling her out on it is a problem.

1. She is fat. She doesn't need to be stick thin, but I think we can all agree that she is overweight.
2. She wore a very unflattering dress. There are plenty of curvy and even fat women who have walked a red carpet and rocked it. She did not. She picked a super ugly, unflattering dress. She should have picked a dress that covered her ugly tattoo and chubby arms. If Adele can look gorgeous in an evening gown, then so can Lena...but she needs to try a little harder.
3. Joan is Joan, and that's her shtick. And Kelly knows better than to go after Joan (she'd be fired if sh contradicte her on air and made her look bad...duh).

Interesting theory about Joan's motive. Perhaps you're right. I didn't see last night's show, but I do usually watch it after the big awards ceremonies. I've never heard Joan Rivers or the other "police" on her show ridicule anyone's size or body before. I've been pleasantly surprised and pleased with the way they critique the fashion while being very accepting of women's different bodies. They do often note how well or how poorly a dress flatters the wearer, but they treat weight the same way they treat any other physical trait that affects the way a dress looks on someone, like height, coloring, bustiness, etc. It's always been respectful of women's actual bodies, and the larger message has been that everyone can look good, can look their best, with thoughtful fashion choices.
In other words, criticizing Lena's body seems like a real departure.

But they chose Christina Hendricks as their best dressed of the night - and she is definitely not a size 2! I think they were more making fun of "Lena Dunham" the *celebrity* which - as others have pointed out - is what she has chosen to do by putting her naked body on each and every episode of her show. She does this so that people will notice her. She wore the hideous dress on the red carpet so that people will notice her. She got tattoos so that people will notice her. If she didn't partake of all this attention-seeking behavior, none of us would even give her a second look.

I don't care what Lena Dunham weighs. But her outfit was not flattering for her figure. You don't have to be a size 0 or 2 or 4 to dress nicely.
Adele knows how to dress for a full figure. So does Christina Hendriicks. Lena seems to like wearing fugly ill-fitting clothes.

It's Joan Rivers. She has dieted herself to a fare-thee-well and had a ridiculous quantity of plastic surgery because doing those things enables her to meet her aesthetic standards. Those standards do not intersect with Lena Dunham's at all, so it doesn't surprise me that she was insulting, just like it doesn't surprise me that Howard Stern says horrible things.
It does surprise me that anyone would watch Joan Rivers or listen to Howard Stern. If you don't like it, don't listen. Let the market handle it.
