Oops, hit send too soon, but it's great to hear someone on this board w/ a good sense of humor.

So, for a 15$ haircut, you hand 40$?????

Yes, I do. It's the holidays and we see her every 6 weeks throughout the year to cut DS's hair. I don't think that kind of holiday tip is unreasonable at all.

20% is the standard tip nowadays.

This, unless I want to actually give more.

I'd tip $5. It seems cheap to tip less than that if they've spent any amount of time on it and they've done a good job.

+1.

I waited tables in college. I was lucky enough to be doing it for spending money, but most of my coworkers did it for their living. Believe me, the $2 means more to them than you.

Also, rounding up to the next "even" number will be remembered and get you labeled a "good customer". Which does make a difference in service.

My son's haircuts are $14. He screams and flails the whole time. I tip at least $10 to cover my embarrassment.

The barber shop we go to usually give my son a good cut, so I have no problem handing them the $20. Especially since I can't imagine they make that much money and the do their best to make him comfortable.

In situations like these, I like to consider who appreciates the $2 more - me or them. I'm fortunate enough that it is them.

I tip $5 on a good cheap haircut for my kid.

I can also go elsewhere and pay more for a worse haircut where the $5 is the "right" amount. Seems a bargain to be generous on the cheap haircut.
