DC is not an Olympic class city.

Things will change when the money is right. Eventually, a day will come when Snyder will make more money from the name change (all new paraphernalia) than keeping it the same. Then, he can stride to the microphone and talk about how enlightened he is blah blah.

The FedEx lease is a red herring. The land is worth more for development than having a stadium sitting on it with a handful of major events per year. They were clever to get the Metro stop upgrade and new beltway interchange, which will enhance it's value for whatever comes next. The lease can be torn up at any time.

The bigger stadium story is that Snyder has the oldest and worst stadium in the division, and that cannot continue. The DC city council/mayor's office are chomping at the bit to get their hands on football tickets for their friends and family. We need a reason to pour a couple billion into a Metrorail upgrade. How do I tie those threads together? Olympics in 2024 with a grand new stadium at the old RFK site.

Well, that's exactly what they did to Darkie toothpaste:

Slate magazine has decided to never refer to the team's name in print ever again. They just call it "Washington's NFL team". I have decided to follow suit. Don't know if it will catch on.

Indians don't call themselves Native-Americans anymore than blacks call themselves African-Americans, or for that matter any other ethnic group calling themselves such and such hyphenated Americans as well.

Calling people hyphenated Americans is just creation and a manifestation of white guilt.

Go back to the article as it was originally posted. It was about the pride some NA communities take in the name as it is their high school team name. Will the PC police dhow up and tell them they should be offended and change their name? If they are not offended, are they exhibiting "false consciousness?"

If they were called the DC Darkies this debate wouldn't last two seconds. I don't really see how their current name is any different. Except it disses a much smaller group.

I was opposed to the change until recently, but now it's time. There are some words, jokes, and practices that once seemed normal and acceptable, which now finally need to be put to rest and never resurrected. Unfortunately, for many of their fans who love the team and it's history, the name Redskins must go.

FWIW - most of the words and jokes I once thought to be humorous and acceptable were usually about other people and not those close to me. My sensitivity and my sensibilities always seemed to heighten when the jokes hit too close to home.

Not the PP but yeah, you can. And I think the name is offensive, although I don't get all bent out of shape over it. There are too many other things in Indian Country to worry about. I do think it contributes to stereotyping by people who don't know any Indians.
