My wedding dress was $225. But then a couple of years ago I spent $900 on a cocktail dress. The brand was Moschino Cheap & Chic. Probably the most expensive piece of clothing I will ever own. I've been buying things from thrift stores and Macy's clearance racks my whole life. But wow I put that dress on and I felt so good. I had to have it.

It is next to impossible to find a dress that a) fits me and b) is flattering. I'm not spending much on something I will begrudgingly wear once.
It's a shame. I love dresses and pathetically sift through the pics of the new arrival dresses on the web pages of my favorite stores.

Just under 200. It is a little black dress that I have gotten an insane amount of use out of. Bought it before the wedding phase started and I wore it to as many weddings as I could without overlapping guests, and business formal events, and vacations....beyond worth it. Better value than buying several cheaper dresses.

Just bought a 338.00 dress for an event--but then found an awesome dress for 30.00 at consignment so will return the other. then spent 150 on great shoes.
Generally in the 50 to 200 range for most dress. Spent 700 on wedding dress .

Consignment stores (I'm not in DC) have some surprising finds when it comes to formal wear.
I paid $400 for my wedding dress at the traveling Brides Against Breast Cancer dress sale.
To attend a wedding, I paid $100 for a dress on sale at Macy's. I've worn it multiple times since.

I hit up TJMaxx and Nordstrom rack. Outlets. I wait til the sales at the outlets! Or the clearance rack at TJmaxx. I'm pretty hardcore.
My first stop is the clearance section of any store. I worked retail for a decade and cannot imagine the travesty of paying regular price. You can save money but it takes sifting and sorting through sale merchandise.

About $500 for a dress I wore for several years (college formals and then post college weddings)
But generally I'm like PP and I shop sales. Even if I don't really need a dress if i find one I love for a good deal, I'll buy it because it will always come in handy (I love dresses and rarely wear pants). I've also been the same size (other than 6 months of my pregnancy and a week after birth) for the last 9 years so that kind of helps things.

Probably about $250 for my wedding dress. And I have a couple of $150+ dresses in my closet.
Mostly I shop sales, though. I have dresses that are $300+ full retail in my closet, but I paid closer to $100.

Me again, yes, I only paid $300 for my dress, but I thought paying so much money for a dress you will wear once is not very smart, I also had a very inexpensive wedding in Congressional Cemetary, and had a BBQ reception at my home. I'm sure many posters on here would consider me trashy.

My wedding dress cost about 5k (Vera Wang). I have a bunch of dresses (Roland Mouret, Dior, Escada, Missoni, Alexander McQueen) that were in the 1k range.
