That's great, but if money is a factor it's not worth it.
+1 I went to UNC as an OOS. I transferred out. Not worth the OOS tuition to go to a school that the in-staters considered their safety.

I would agree. It is super hard to get in from OOS.
+1 Way harder to get into OOS than Michigan. DS friend got rejected at UNC but accepted at Penn and Northwestern. 35 ACT and UW 4.0
So all these smart kids from OOS (like 10%?) get mixed in with so-so kids from NC. I don’t know if that’s a good thing.

The campus is gorgeous and the town is really cute. It seems like one of those great places where you can get a good education and have a lot of fun, too.

Anonymous wrote:Good thing that Michigan has that global reputation because the region it is located in is an economic basket case. Sure, Michigan will put you on the inside track for all those jobs in the Midwest, especially Detroit, but UNC is a stronger name in the south - where jobs are available.
I spend a lot of time in Asian and Europe and I don't think either school has real strong name recognition in either region, but I don't doubt that Michigan is more well known. In Asia it's mainly Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and the top California schools Stanford, Cal, UCLA and USC.

DD has put it on her list.
Is Chapel Hill really in the same ballpark as the top public universities? What's life like for a student from outside of NC (or the south). Does the name/reputation have enough cachet outside of the south?
