You could also do something near Dunn Loring metro - it's an easy commute to Tysons up Gallows or Cedar, and he'd get a metro seat 99% of the time.
Ballston to Tysons commuter here, 20 minutes in the morning, not exactly crawling compared to a previous Rockville to Tysons commute (before HOT lanes)... In the evening it's typically 30-35 minutes, longer if there is something going on downtown.
