OP here. Turns out my boss had to cut her trip short so will be in the office tomorrow

Which is worse - being told over phone while on business or the chance of hearing it from someone else!
This is not high school and you are not doing anything wrong. Wait until monday, resign like a professional. What is heard through the grapevine is not your problem.
