If your son likes sports fiction books, try those written by Mike Lupica. My sons (9 and 11) like the Lupica-written books and the Matt Christopher sports books. My boys also like the old Hardy Boys books.

Other books:

The 39 Clues Series
The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the most popular book in the series)
A Wrinkle in Time

Great idea...They too have an age range category of 9 - 12

Last years nominees were -
9 – 12 Nominees

Blake, Kendare – Anna Dressed in Blood

Gagnon, Michelle – Don’t Turn Around

Green, John – The Fault in Our Stars

Levithan, David – Every Day

McCormick, Patricia – Never Fall Down

Monaghan, Annabel – A Girl Named Digit

Myracle, Lauren – Shine

Saenz, Benjamin Alire – Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Van Draanen, Wendelin – The Running Dream

Zarr, Sara – How to Save a Life

This is actually a grade level recommendation, not an age level recommendation. Those books are amazing, for teens.
