I shop at only two stores: Wegmans and Costco. Costco is still cheaper for some items that Wegmans does not carry in a bulk pack, but they have a surprising number of bulk items to compete with Costco and the prices are competitive. The only things I would avoid at Wegmans are their prepared foods (which, like prepared foods at any grocery store, are pricey) and bread, which is absurdly marked up. I have not compared their prices on health and beauty items so I can't comment on that, but on non-prepared food, they have better prices on most items than any store I've tried other than Target ... but Target has crappy produce and a terrible selection, so it's not worth it to me to make a trip there every week to save 30 cents on a few items. I like that Wegmans has everyday low prices instead of sales. I don't like to menu plan based on sales, but at Safeway, Harris Teeter or Giant the prices are ridiculous *unless* you buy stuff on sale. I can get exactly what I need at Wegmans every week without fail for a consistent price. Works for me!
Plus, Wegmans is the most pleasant shopping experience I've had other than Whole Foods. The store I go to (in Gainesville, VA) is HUGE, clean, well organized, with a second to none selection. I was amazed and all the friends I've taken there have been amazed by it too.
