Try an Osteopath- much gentler but will achieve the same thing. Many women in Europe, Canada and Australia get manual treatment through out their pregnancies.

I am 38.5 weeks and am considering going to see a chiropractor for some tailbone pain.

Can someone tell me what to expect from a visit with a chiropractor?

I was skeptical about the chiro but have found the chiro I go to in Alexandria great and has really helped my hip pain! I wanted to go to Dr Noya but found he was too $$$ without chiro insurance so I go to Dr. Deblansky 703-660-6770

I see a chiropractor 2x a week. She is awesome and trained in treating pregnant women (and there are always a few others in the waiting room with me). I'm 33 weeks along and still feeling good. If you are in pain, I'd certainly give it a try.

Also, as for the legitimacy of chiropractic care (I'm certainly no expert), I was referred by my OB to help support optimal fetal positioning for birth.

I'm also in Herndon and love Dr Karl Petrie with the American Health & Wellness center on Franklin Farm Road. I've tried some other local ones that just didn't help, despite good recommendations on Yelp.

I highly recommend my chiropractor in Gerogetown, Dr. Philip Bahnson. I have seen him on and off for almost 25 years. He is not aggressive. He does not insist on multiple visits. He does not do x-rays. He really knows my back and how to help me when sciatica hit in all my pregnancies.

For tailbone pain, use a coccyx cushion--a wedge with a cutout on the back side--rather than a donut.

My midwifery practice sent me to a chiropractor days short of having my second. My tailbone was misaligned, probably from being broken during my first birth, and they wanted to avoid it getting injured again if possible.

I saw Mariella Young in Rockville, who was great.

I had it all through my first pregnancy. According to my chiro, who sees A LOT of pregnant patients, many women have a curved coccyx and if you've had a fall at any point in life, it can be even more severe. The baby is just putting pressure on it. I saw the chiro about twice a week and it did provide some relief, but not complete relief. In the meantime, I suggest a donut cushion for your desk chair. It will eliminate the pressure on your tailbone while sitting.

If you're in Fairfax county, Dr Will Sonak in Ashburn is great. The Loudoun Midwives have been working with him for years.

I went to Dr. Cohen (and Dr. Hatcher, who is in her practice). Nothing but good results, although I wasn't in terrible pain before going, just had some back/neck pains. I actually went because I had been told the baby was breech and chiropractors can help turn a baby. The baby turned before my first chiro appt, but I kept going back because I felt less achey and more relaxed after my visits. Dr. Cohen's practice has a lot of pregnant women and she is a mom too. They have an office in Eastern Market and another at L and 19th NW.

By 33 weeks I was in so much pain I was literally hunched over. I went to a chiropractor and he was amazing. I was pain-free in 2 weeks. I also went a couple times postpartum and I really feel like it helped me recover more quickly from birth. I stopped going after the first couple times after birth because I haven't felt like I needed it, but during pregnancy I would recommend it to anyone.

I would do it, but I am very comfortable with my chiropractor.

Do it. Made me feel so much better.

I am going to Dr Andrino in Alexandria as well - no pain, but my first baby was sunny side up. Trying to avoid it this time. I like him, he uses Webster technique.
