OP, A similar thing happened to me once. I was walking in the parking lot toward my car when a man suddenly backed out of his parking space and missed me by inches. In fact, I was so startled that I yelled and hit his SUV with the two grocery bags that I was carrying.

Yes, the driver did a dumb thing, but cars have blind spots and the number of times that I have had people pop out blithely strolling behind my SUV when I'm backing out! You should also be on your guard walking through a parking lot.

Pedestrians do not suddenly pop up out of nowhere, like mushrooms. And pedestrians also don't know, and can't know, about your SUV's blind spots.

So yes, pedestrians should be careful when walking in a parking lot. But it's the driver's responsibility to make sure that there are no pedestrians anywhere near, before the driver backs up.

Also, if this happens to you often, please consider getting a back-up camera.

Um, OK, OP attempted to make eye contact, yelled and waved, jumped out of the way and was able to see that a teen girl was driving and was on her phone? In a split second? You can "screw me" all you want but the OP is leaving out some details, the OP is retelling a story someone told her or the story is completely untrue. Wouldn't be the first time on here. The message itself is important but there's a better way to go about it then simply concocting a story. There are enough true stories of such unfortunate incidents.

Teens actually see lots of videos on this stuff (but they're young and invincible and dont listen to adults much anymore). It's the adults who really may not be aware of the dreadful statistics that accompany texting while driving.

I know of a story where a cop accidentally "broke" someone's phone who he pulled over for crossing the yellow line while he was texting. Two thumbs up for that one!

Even better....

1. Phone and a heft fine, like maybe $1000 on a first offense;

2. Car and DL on a second... or perhaps a hefty fine and/or year in jail. I see that for things that are a much lesser offense.

Maybe they should confiscate your car or driver's license if they catch you doing that dangerous shit.

In South Africa, police will confiscate your phone if they see you using it while driving. Maybe a lesson to be applied here in the U.S. - secondary offense or no.

This left me speechless. The teen driver's insurance paid her victim only $50K for $1 million in hospital bills. She and her family should be made to pay more, even if it means she cannot go to college. If she gets a scholarship, it should be taken away and given to her victim.
