Fairfax Swimming Pool is open for two weekends after Labor Day. But you have to be a member.

I was just in the Potomac River today (north of Great Falls) We were paddling, but got in for a minute to swim. It was cold. Kids were then cold for the rest of the trip. Gages say 78 degrees, but the sun was not shining, so it felt colder.

Lake Anna and Deep Creek Lake both have swimming after Labor Day.

What about switching to an indoor pool in DC? There are some great waterfalls/shallow swimming holes in Shenandoah. We recently took both kids in hiking backpacks and they loved it.

When I lived in AZ, a few people died every year from the brain eating amoeba after swimming in Lake Havasu. Honestly, it put me off fresh water swimming. I did it once in Spain....dont need to do it again and won't take my kids. Personal choice.

Yep, mine is open through the end of sept. The Bethesda Y outdoor pool is open year round. I laugh when I get the notices in Feb that it's below 32 so the pool will open at 10. I can't imagine swimming in 35 degree weather but people do. I think the water is heated but at some point you have to get out of the water into the air and stand in the concrete.

Any natural body of water where you don't know where the bottom is, can't see swimmers, or is moving, e.g., tide or current will be more dangerous than swimming in a pool.
