I have been smoking for about 2 years about 3 cigs a night while out with friends. I don't reek of smoke and my teeth aren't yellow. I know it is still a risk and also second and third hand smoke but is "social smoking" as stigmatized as being just a smoker plain and simple?

You stink. Trust us.... And you look slutty while you smoke. But, maybe that's your plan.

Ok time out.

Now smoking means you look "slutty"? Do you even know the definition of that word?

I think you are taking smoking way out of proportion.

My thoughts exactly. I seriously had no idea people were so passionate about smoking.

I think if I did smoke to an extent that he knew about it, we would have had an all out war.

So you smoke 3 nights a week and your husband doesn't even know about it?

I don't smoke 3 nights a week. 2 at the most and I don't always smoke when out with friends. But no he doesn't know. I brush my teeth when I get home (he is usually already in bed) and I change clothes and usually wash my face anyway. By the time I get in bed with DH he doesn't smell anything.

OP, I was a social smoker for YEARS - like from the age of 17 until age 40, when I went on a medication that couldn't be taken by a smoker. (unrelated to the smoking.) At my peak, I probably had half a pack a week during finals weeks and most weeks it was more like a couple cigarettes a weekend while drinking.

No lasting effects, no yellow teeth, no smell, and my distance running never suffered. I also never got addicted, though I do miss it a little!

Not everyone who smokes gets addicted. Some do.

Most of the people in my social circle are social smokers. My dh is as well. It drives me nuts that he does this...I almost see it as a peer pressure thing, like he has to join in so he can feel included. I don't think that's why he does it, but that's what peeves me about it.

I smoked for a long time. The first few times I tried to quit, I allowed myself to smoke socially. Bad idea. Segued right back into pack-a-day. Since I've quit for good I have not allowed myself one single puff regardless of how much I've had to drink (7 years now).

Oh, and yes, to a nonsmoker, you do smell like smoke when you come home even after smoking only 2 cigs.

If you want to have a roguish smoking habit, own it. Subsequently seeking salvation of your self esteem here will disappoint. And I'd be surprised if your husband were surprised that you smoke. And don't bother applying for life insurance until five years after you stop.

Sure, I'm a little bitter that I was a tobacco junkie and could never smoke in moderation for long. In sustaining your mild habit, you have a rare capability. But a lot of people still render you a scumbag anyway.

Okay... point one out to me and I'll be sure not to ask them about my "addiction".

I smoke and have life insurance. My husband is a social smoker like OP and has it, too. Just costs more.

One cig and you smell. Your husband probably knows about your habit. Any smoking increases your chance of lung cancer, which s generally incurable and very painful.
