Keratin treatments themselves are nothing short of life-changing for frizzy or too-curly hair, and I USED TO pay $450 every 3 months for one.
However, after I sobered up and did the math, three years ago I started using Uncurly (uncurly.com) which is the only DIY keratin that's as good as a salon treatment. In fact, I'd say it's better in my case. Factoring in what I get out of one bottle, it costs me only $25 per treatment and they last 3-4 months. Totally easy. Love it.

I did the Brazilian straightening a few summers ago. It lasted 5-6 weeks and cost $400, when I included the shampoos that were supposed to keep it going. Totally not worth it. If I had a big event - college reunion or wedding - I might consider it again, but it's too much money for just the average DC summertime frizz blues.

Yes it works. I do it in the winter only. My curls actually look great and stay nicely together in the high humidity.

Does the coconut oil smell bother you? I have used it several times, but even after washing my hair, I hated the smell. Kind of like an old piña colada.

I re-do it each time I am about to wash my hair, so every other day, unless I'm in a hurry and don't have time. There are also people who slap on the coconut oil and then put a shower cap on top of that and sleep that way overnight, but I wouldn't be able to sleep hearing the crinkles of a shower cap each time I moved my head.

AA woman here. I buy it at WF. You can also get it through Amazon. It truly works. Keratin is dangerous. My hairdresser stopped doing it one she read the research.
