Back in the day I chose 202 because I do most of my business in DC proper. I've also moved between DC, MD, and VA so keeping DC made the most sense as it's the central hub.

Half of the accomplished people in this area came from out of state and have their original area codes. I would not worry.

Absolutely not. You are closer to 202 (DC) than 571 (outer burbs). I went with 202 when I lived in Arlington.

I hear ya, OP! When I got my cell phone, I was told that 703 was not available, but did I want 571? No way! I said. I grew up in the inner burbs and no way no how wanted a 571 area code. I took 202 and have had that for about 10 years, and have always been glad I did. I associate 571 with outer burbs, new money, mcmansions, etc etc etc also and didn't want that association.

703--that's its older and sounds like a "real" area code because it has a zero in the middle. People know its Northern Virginia; 202 would be confusing.

This reminds me of that Seinfeld episode when Elaine lost her 212 number and was going nuts. Use 202. It's more immediately recognized across the country.
