Yes, that is the worst... having unwanted guests who can't even respect the rules of the house and the fact that a little child is sleeping. Good for your SIL, I wish I had her guts.

Some families are just like this. We had to cut our week at the beach 2 days short to attend my nephew's bris (where we barely laid eyes on him, and certainly couldn't hold him because there were 75 people there.) He's turning two soon and my SIL is having not 1, not 2, but THREE days in a row of birthday events for him. As in, cookout Friday night, party Saturday afternoon, brunch Sunday morning. Sorry but I DO NOT want to spend my entire weekend at her house. It seems so self-centered to me.

I would like to think I am one of these people. I don't typically call people on their birthdays, aside from my own mom. I do always buy nice gifts for neices/nephews and give them the nearest to their birthday that I see them.

Wow, can't believe you are upset over b-day call. I don't call my SIL family. Birthdays are not a big deal. My own mother forgets to call me. Would be mad about the 8 hour drive for the baptism. Yikes!

I don't think it really makes sense to be mad at her for not calling on birthdays. In order for me to take offense at a family member's behavior, they have to go out of their way to intentionally make us miserable. Forgetting you does not automatically equal malice. It would not sweat this at all.

I'm not offended in the least that my SIL doesn't call any of us on our birthdays. It does bother me that she's asked for thousands of dollars worth of "loans" from DH that she seems to have forgotten, that she's living with a new man every year and we're forced to introduce these deadbeats to our kids at family gatherings, etc. I could go on and on. In fact, I'm thrilled that she doesn't call us on our birthdays so we don't have to talk to her!

Dh's family is not big on bdays, I was put off the first time or two when they didn't call him or seem to recognize the day, thought it was rude and felt sorry for him. I was much younger and clueless then, lol. Years later realized it's not an insult or a slight on the part of my ILs. I don't know why, it doesn't matter, they just don't make as big a deal out of bdays as other people might.
