This. I think even Dr. Gridlock said (not that he's an authority or anything but still) that it makes far less sense to back into a small x by x spot and out into a much larger space. Plus, honestly, some people are just really bad (and slow) at it. truth.

I always try to back-in when I can because i a much better at it than pulling in. However, in my condo parking garage, I always pull in because of the weird parking lay out and angles. One time, just per chance, I had to back in because someone was blocking my usual entrance point. That one time, I also ran out of battery. If I would have parked by pulling in that time, no way in hell would someone be a able to reach my car to jump start it. Luckily and again by chance, I backed in that time- and was able to get jump started easily. This is just one reason why backing in can be certainly be beneficial.

Yes, you are correct that the number of blind spots is the same. Here is what is different--the number of MOVING cars that are potentially coming into those blind spots. When you back in, the cars in your blind spots are fixed and known. When you pull out of a space in reverse, you don't know whether cars are moving towards your car from either side. Also, you are less likely to see a pedestrian.

But the difference is when backing in, you control the situation more. Your lane is not going to have traffic since you're in it, and you can easily see opposing traffic.

Backing out, you're faced with both directions of traffic and a larger area that you can't see.

OP probably had to wait an extra 10 seconds for someone to back in and is now raging mightily at the injustice of it all.
