Probably because so many elite colleges were men's colleges and that was part of the culture and tradition. There is probably much less hazing now than in the past.

It's about making contacts and friends that's why you pay for it. Education is second especially if it's not a STEM degree.

Thee kids are probbaly raised by the same moms who drink multiple glasses of wine every night "to unwind" and wonder why people call them alcoholics.

That is true. Kids learn from their parents that the only way to deal with life, relax, or be social is with booze. So sad.

No I am not at all bitter about them not accepting me 8 years ago because I ended up at a much better place....Yale!

I think the whole Dartmouth drinking culture situation is a result of the ill-fated decision not to admit you. I think that admissions mistake caused the Dartmouth campus to go into blackout drunk mode every weekend. If you had been admitted, things would have been different. Didn't you get rid of the crime in New Haven while at Yale? That's the rumor anyway.

Remember, even if the school itself seems stereotypical, your student will be able to find like-minded studious friends if that what DC really wants. If the real issue is that you can't trust your DC not to be swayed by the crowd, DC could be swayed anywhere.

You can always choose not to pay for such an education, or even to keep DC at home and send DC to a local school, if you're really worried. However, as I remember it, college is the time to try a few parties, find your own pace and learn how to study independently.

Don't expect the whole picture on Dartmouth -- or anything really -- from Rolling Stone magazine.

Great post. Rolling Stone is entertainment, not journalism or investigative reporting. Dartmouth is not like the other Ivies -- and that is a good thing.
