It's so exaggerated. Walkable downtown? How many streets and home are actually walkable? And "very close to DC" is totally relative, this is most definitely not the closest suburban town to DC, and not the most expensive in terms of costs of RE and taxes either.

I hope it's just the one poster who types "McClean" repeatedly.

For those touting Arlington, Bethesda, etc. you have to realize that this was a list of the best towns with a population between 10K and 50K. Neither Arlington nor Bethesda even qualify. Not sure if McLean would even be considered since it's not actually a "town."

I'd say Vienna would be a great place to live if you worked in Tysons and lived in the real downtown (walkable) area.

I live in Vienna and we absolutely LOVE it here! It is definitely a great place to live. To raise kids, to be empty nesters, to retire. There are plenty of people in your neighborhood and on your street that will be going through the same life phase as you.

Love the walkability, schools are excellent, has a very strong community feeling, plenty of activities to choose from, lots of annual town events, etc. It's really a gem in this area.

Obviously there are those that disagree, this has been debated on DCUM plenty of times.

Do I agree with Money mag? YES.

Always a seat on metro, 1st exit off of 66 from the beltway. 123 is slow one way during rush hour (clear sailing against traffic), but there are several ways around it if you live there. The great schools, parades, concerts, trails, and accessible to all the job centers - bethesda, DC, Tysons, and Reston/dulles technology corridor. More affordable homes and cul-de-sacs instead of grids. A slightly less entitled feel than some of the places named above due to less crazy affluence and status seeking. We are very happy and look forward to raising our kids here.

Vienna is most certainly a town and one of only a few in Northern Virginia (Town of Herndon, Town of Clifton, and Town of Leesburg being a few others). There is a town council, its own fire department, own fire station, town laws and town taxes. You can hate it or you can love it, but it is definitely a town.
