There is no Whitman school district. Whitman is a high school in Bethesda that is part of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). MCPS has 202 elementary schools, 38 middle schools, and 25 high schools.


I live in Howard County and love it, but I would not classify it as near DC. Its a long commute.

Keep in mind that Fairfax and Montgomery counties have some of the best schools in the nation - so even the schools that are "mediocre" by comparison are still quite good. Each school has good and bad teachers. Sometimes these “top schools” aren’t a good fit for your kids. As for getting into the better state universities, if your child is at one of the top schools – the competition is tougher than if they were at some of the other schools.

The PPs are defining "good schools" as "schools attended almost entirely by the children of affluent white or Asian parents". If these are your criteria too, then in Montgomery County, you should look in the Whitman cluster (FARMS <5%, 70% white, 12% Asian) or the Churchill cluster (FARMS <5%, 58% white, 22% Asian).

Annandale in the Woodson HS area. Or the part of Springfield that goes into West Springfield High School. For Maryland, Silver Spring in the Blair HS zone.

With your budget you're basically based out of North Arlington and much of close in Bethesda (Whitman). I'd suggest Walter Johnson high school cluster in MD, or possibly Silver Spring, MD.

Let's see, what's missing (assuming you're not a troll trying to cause a shitstorm):

Location of your and your husband's jobs (and please, not just "Arlington" or "DC", but a specific area within "Arlington" or "DC", like "Rosslyn" or "Foggy Bottom".)
What sort of house you want (single-family, townhouse, condo), how old that house is, and if you want a SFH, how much of a yard you're going to want
Your budget
Your desire for a neighborhood -- miles of residential, highly walkable to parks/schools/libraries/restaurants, or what?
Your tolerance for a commute

Some schools -- such as Einstein (MD) and Stuart (VA) -- will have a higher group of low-achievers than say Whitman (MD) and Langley (VA). BUT, a high achiever at Stuart is comparable to a high achiever at Langley.

I just took a walk in my Jamestown/Williamsburg/Yorktown neighborhood and count several houses.

The higher achievers transfer out and go to ib or ap programs at the better schools

Very useful it gives you a rank based on test scores comparing to schools in the state and county. You can also find out demographics and how many reduced and free lunches, this mirrors the neighborhood.
